Homelessness and Social Media

Homelessness is a big problem in today’s society, a problem that isn’t really being faced, in fact people are walking away from the problem instead of helping. There are many homeless people in the United States. There are more than half a million people that have no homes, or that are facing financial problems. Usually people don’t have places to sleep when the weather is bad. So they end up sleeping at places that aren’t meant for sleeping such as trains, park and abandoned buildings.

Marical messaging-

Through a form of Social Media, Marical Messaging, a man was able to reunite with his family after 40 years. Marical Messaging help spread the word. Only 985 people viewed the post with only 18 likes and the man was able to meet his family. Marical Messaging has reunited many people that were missing their loved ones.

Twitter-

In NYC most homeless don’t have shelter during the weather’s bad condition. A man tweeted to help the homeless. After a little bit he received many replies all stating different ways that they can contribute to helping. People gave out food and drinks, they also provided generators in case of the loss of power to shelters. Only one tweet was able to help many homeless.

Youtube-

Many people that are homeless get tested weather they want food or drugs. Every person choose food over a bottle of alcohol. They all also stated food meant much more to them then Alcohol. Every homeless does not have to be a drug addict. The money a homeless may be given isn't always spent on drugs or on alcohol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1-IIsVPLsU

A social experiment was done on a man that was homeless about money. A boy that was doing the experiment asked many people for money but all refused. But then he asked a man that was sitting on the street. The homeless man saved money for about seven months and he gave in to the boy that was asking for the money. He said he was saving the money so he can have a better life in the future, instead he gave it away because he thought the boy was going through tough time.

Academic Articles-

In the US there are more than 555000 families of young children homeless. The high rates of homeless population affects children in many ways but it especially affects their education. 75% of homeless children perform below grade level in reading (walker-Dalhouse,Risko,2008). These children have trouble paying attention in class because of the chaos that they are going through. Children that face homelessness, their brains develop slower than kids that do not have any financial issues (Walker-Dalhouse,Risko,2008; Gargiulo,2006). These students are recommended for special education because of the stress they are facing. Schools try helping the children that are homeless by providing them with resources that they can’t afford. Most homeless children grow up in an environment where they have to deal with violence, alcohol/drug abuse, underemployment and many more. Many of these things lead them to being more violent, or drug addicts (Gargiulo,2006).
